Established in 1994, the Department of English is as old as the institution.

The Department, housed in the first floor of the Main Building, has five faculty members – 2 Assistant Professors and 3 State-Aided College Teachers (SACT).

The faculty members are actively involved in  research, publishing regularly in several reputed academic journals  in addition to presenting papers in national and international seminars and conferences.

The student teacher ratio is about 45:1.

 

The Department of English currently offers the following Undergraduate Courses:

 

(i) 3-Year Degree / 4-Year Honours under the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (CCFUP) as per National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 and

(ii) 3-Year Honours Course (July 2019-June 2023) under the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS)

The B.A. Undergraduate Courses in English cover a wide range of topics including European classical literature, British and American literatures, Postcolonial literatures, Philology, Rhetoric, Literary theory and criticism and Research methodology.

Classroom teaching consists of lectures, presentations and interactive sessions.

In addition to curriculum-based learning, students are encouraged to develop and nurture effective communication and critical thinking skills.

Learning Objectives:

The primary objective of this interdisciplinary add-on course is to help build a robust foundation for independent critical thinking around common ethical questions and decision points and to provide participants (young adults) with social and emotional learning.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • integrate classroom learning with bigger and more general life issues
  • make more ethically-informed choices
  • have a firmer grasp over the rationale of decision making and apply the knowledge in everyday contexts
  • become more aware, empathetic, conscientious, and responsible citizens

Eligibility:

Any student currently enrolled in an Undergraduate Course (3 Year-Honours/ General/ 4 Year-Degree) in Dewan Abdul Gani College is eligible take this course.

 

Fee Structure:

This course is offered free of cost to all enrolled students.

Certificate details:

Upon successful completion of the course, a Certificate of Completion issued by Dewan Abdul Gani College will be given to each participant.

English Communication & Soft Skills

Level: Introductory

Duration: 30 hours (12/12/2022 – 30/12/2022)

Offered by the Department of ENGLISH

Course Instructors: Shri Babulal Murmu, Smt. Mousumi Adhikary, Dr. Satarupa Sinha Roy

 

Learning Objectives: This course has been designed with primarily two broad objectives in mind: first, to enable participant (with basic skills in spoken English) to communicate more effectively in the English language and second, to provide a foundational training to participants on soft skills, with added emphasis on interpersonal communication, teamwork, and adaptability.

In this 2-week course (30 hours), participants are taught the different ways to make a strong and confident personal introduction. Upon completion of the course, they are expected to develop speaking skills necessary for group discussions and presentations: how to clarify, summarize and speak confidently before an audience. Throughout the course, participants are made more familiar with the functional use of English with the objective of making them more fluent and accurate when they speak.

Besides regular teaching-learning the Department of English conducts the following activities:

  1. Offer 30-hour Add-on Courses on multi- and interdisciplinary topics
